About the Charities File

Welcome to The Charities File, a joint project of of the Carleton Centre for Community Innovation funded by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to build the capacity of small and rural charitable organizations across Canada and assist with annual compliance reporting to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Our goals and objectives:
  • enhance the awareness and capacity of small and rural charities’ boards to comply with their obligations under the Income Tax Act through information, training, and support to volunteer board members
  • increase the capacity of small and rural charities to comply with their obligations under the Income Tax Act
  • provide training directly to volunteer board members
Charities in Canada are trusted by the public and governments to conduct their business responsibly. Each charity is required to file a Registered Charity Information Return, annually, on form T3010A/B. Yet, each year a number of charities are either not filing their returns, filing them late, or filing with incomplete or inaccurate information, sometimes resulting in the de-registration of charities). This project will enhance knowledge among leaders, volunteers, practitioners, managers, and allied professionals, helping meet the current requirements for filing and preparing for future changes in the way returns are submitted to the Government of Canada. Please check out the resources and look into training opportunities in your region. Get ‘On Board’ with us!
